Acun Ilicali’s ownership at Hull City has been nothing short of a rollercoaster in the four years since he took charge from the Allam family.
The charismatic Turkish businessman dreamed of the Premier League; it’s taken plenty of ups and downs to get there, but finally, City are back in the big time.

Over the course of that period, City have had five managers, one of whom was then appointed as head coach at Chelsea, before being sacked four months later, flirted with the play-offs, survived relegation to League One on goal difference and signed more than 70 players.
It’s now in the Premier League, so to say it’s been quite a ride would be something of an understatement, and that ride culminated in a sensational day at Wembley two weeks ago, and another memorable occasion across the city a couple of days later, as fans celebrated with their players, manager and owner throughout the streets and eventually in Queen Victoria Square.

For Ilicali, promotion to the Premier League was the end of a long, expensive and emotional journey, and now, a fresh journey begins for the Turkish businessman. It’s one that will be focused on survival and then flourishing in the top flight – the most difficult league on the planet.

It’s a journey that hasn’t always been straightforward. Managers have come and gone, and so too have many players and with it, huge amounts of money. The club were hit by a transfer fee restriction last summer, meaning they were unable to pay loan or transfer fees this season.
That caused embarrassment for the club and for Ilicali, but the appointment of Jakirovic was a masterstroke, and by some distance, his best since arriving in January 2022.
The arrival of Oli McBurnie lit the blue touch paper, sparked something in the rest of the squad, and led by hometown hero Lewie Coyle, the Tigers have achieved what was viewed as impossible 12 months ago.

Jakirovic has guided the club into the Premier League in his first season in English football and joins the pantheon of great Tigers managers, which includes Phil Brown and Steve Bruce.
While there are many differing views held on Ilicali by fans and observers alike, few could argue that he’s tried anything other than making City better and achieving that dream. Mistakes have been made along the way, and they’ll continue to be made. Running a football club isn’t straightforward, especially when you’ve never done it before, and you’re doing it in a different country with a very different way of going about things compared to what you’re used to.
Sacking Rosenior was a decision criticised by many, and it looked like it could have backfired massively last season, but City have rebounded in style and against all odds. The campaign has mirrored Ilicali’s life in many ways, flirting with the bottom before rising to the top.

City and Ilicali will now need to operate on a different level than what they’ve been familiar with. The focus and scrutiny will increase significantly, especially on the owner. They’ve gone from being a Championship club to one of just 20 operating in the world’s most-watched league, and with that comes a different type of pressure and expectation.
Given how remarkable this football club is, the ride to get to the Premier League is only part of the story because the ride inside the top flight could yet be more fascinating and dramatic.
Either way, it’ll be box office. Strap in once again, because the ride has only just begun.
