If you needed any more proof that the late-night wars from the days of Letterman and Leno are dead and gone, Jimmy Kimmel and Stephen Colbert — the two canceled kings of talk — have shoveled more dirt onto the grave.
When Kimmel, who recently returned to airwaves after a suspension by ABC, heads to Brooklyn for a week of shows next week, his CBS timeslot rival Colbert will make a guest appearance. Not to be outdone, Colbert will host Kimmel on The Late Show that very same night, Sept. 30.

The television time travel act will be made possible by slight shifts in productions schedules, which will allow the hosts to travel between Brooklyn and Manhattan’s Ed Sullivan Theater as needed.
The news comes as Kimmel’s return to broadcast becomes even more complete. Sinclair, the largest affiliate owner group in the U.S., announced on Friday that it is ending its campaign of preempting Jimmy Kimmel Live! in the wake of his comments about the right’s reaction to Charlie Kirk’s killing. The notoriously conservative company reportedly agree to air Kimmel in its markets again after “productive” talks with ABC and the network’s parent company, Disney.
According to Deadline, Disney agreed to install an independent network-wide ombudsman in the wake of the controversy, which resulted in Kimmel’s show being suspended for a little under a week and a massive wave of public backlash that sent the company’s stock price plummeting.
Kimmel’s return on Tuesday brought a massive number of eyeballs to the late night show. Disney reported that his first show back drew 6.26 million viewers.
Meanwhile, Colbert is fresh off the first win in Best Talk Variety for his iteration of The Late Show at the Emmys. After accepting the award earlier this month, he said that his only immediate plans are to “land this plane absolutely beautifully” ahead of the show’s end next year.
