With plenty of show tunes and humor, Richard Linklater’s Blue Moon will be submitting itself for Best Film Comedy/ Musical consideration at the 2026 Golden Globes, Gold Derby can exclusively report. The film’s star, Ethan Hawke, who plays legendary Broadway lyricist Lorenz Hart, will also be submitted in the corresponding Best Actor category.
The decision to submit as a comedy/musical is a fitting one, given the film’s witty tone and use of Hart’s iconic songs.
More from Gold Derby
Set on the eve of a major Broadway premiere, Blue Moon follows Hart through a single, emotionally charged night as he grapples with professional decline and crumbling love life. The film explores the life of the brilliant but troubled lyricist who, along with composer Richard Rodgers, formed one of Broadway’s most celebrated songwriting duos before Rodgers later partnered with Oscar Hammerstein. Margaret Qualley plays Hart’s muse.
Among Hart’s many contributions to the American songbook are classics like “Blue Moon,” “The Lady Is a Tramp,” “Manhattan,” “My Funny Valentine,” and “Bewitched, Bothered and Bewildered.”
After four Academy Award nominations, many critics see Blue Moon as a potential breakthrough for Hawke. His performance was recently honored with the Silver Medallion at the Telluride Film Festival.
Sony Pictures Classics will also be submitting Rebecca Zlotowski’s French psychological mystery, A Private Life, and it’s star Jodie Foster in the drama category at the Globes.
