Hon. Balaam Barugahara and Hon. Justine Nameere are leading an aggressive anti-corruption drive targeting government institutions in Eastern Uganda and other parts of the country.
Namisindwa District: A district engineer named Walimbwa admitted to embezzling funds meant for road construction. Deep corruption was uncovered in public schools, where funds for toilet construction were swindled, leaving facilities full or in hazardous sanitary states.
State Minister for Higher Education, JC Muyingo, was called upon to close down condemned school toilets to allow for proper reconstruction. Corrupt officials have been given an ultimatum to return the stolen funds or face prosecution.
Supporters applaud the exposure of corrupt officials, while critics argue the ministers are bypassing standard legal procedures to gain “political capital.”
2. Nationwide School Trip Suspension
Following a spike in fatal accidents caused by reckless drivers during school excursions, the Ministry of Education has banned all school trips nationwide.
Public Backlash: The public has heavily criticized the move, calling it a reactive “camera excitement” measure that punishes all schools instead of addressing the root causes of road accidents.Critics highlight a perceived bias, pointing out that when a student tragically died at Seeta High School (an institution associated with Minister JC Muyingo), the school was not closed down for investigation, contrasting sharply with the aggressive measures applied elsewhere.
