The Halloween Vibes Show With A Perfect Rating, Watch With Your Kids

September is coming to a close, and this has been such a weird year that I wasted no time displaying all the spooky decorations that normally don’t come out until October. Once that spooky month hits, I’ll be up to my eyeballs in my favorite horror films; until then, though, I thought I’d ease into the scary festivities with a cozy cartoon that has always had the perfect Halloween vibes. If you’re ready for a tricky treat of a cartoon with a perfect rating on Rotten Tomatoes, it’s time for you to stream Gravity Falls on Disney+.

The premise of Gravity Falls is that it takes place in a city of the same name, a spooky little city where anything can and often does happen. When young twins come to this terrifying town to live with their great uncle (or “grunkle”) for the summer, they soon get caught up in all the madcap misadventures and supernatural shenanigans Gravity Falls has to offer. They also get involved in this town’s many mysteries, and whether they can solve the biggest one may well determine the fate of the world.

On paper, Gravity Falls is a children’s show, and kids are sure to enjoy its colorful characters, its surprising stories, and its menagerie of monsters. But adults will definitely enjoy this Disney series’ smart writing and insanely talented cast of voice actors (more on this soon), and the show rewards patient watching by paying off each provocative plot point it dangles in front of us. That kind of ongoing story makes the show very streaming-friendly, and those with kids may enjoy being able to binge something the whole family can enjoy.

That’s certainly how it was for me, as the missus and I watched this show with our son when he was growing up. Compared to so many awful children’s shows I endured (seriously, Caillou is like a televised war crime), Gravity Falls was a show whose unpredictable stories and pitch-perfect voice acting always kept me coming back for more. Now, the show is a pleasant memory the entire family shares, and we often do our imitations of its talented cast.

Gravity Falls certainly has a slick voice cast, including Jason Ritter (best known outside of voice acting for his Emmy-nominated role in Parenthood) as Dipper, a good-hearted kid whose naïveté often lands him in trouble. Kristen Schaal (best known outside animation for her role in What We Do In the Shadows) plays his twin sister Mabel, the more adventurous sibling who tries to solve most of her problems with a grappling hook. Meanwhile, showrunner Alex Hirsch is perfect as Grunkle Stan, the twins’ great uncle whose twisted sense of humor hides some serious love while providing some “did he really just say that?” quotes.

Some of those quotes have become things I regularly quote, such as Grunkle Stan’s “When there’s no cops around, everything’s legal.” Honestly, every episode is filled with some of the best writing ever put on television. It’s no wonder, then, that Gravity Falls took home a BAFTA and two Emmys, all of which underscores just how popular and critically acclaimed this groundbreaking children’s show really is.

That holds true on Rotten Tomatoes, where Gravity Falls has an all treat, no trick score of 100 percent. Critics generally praised the show’s warmth and memorable voice acting, both of which help bring to life some of the freshest scripts in the entire sci-fi genre. And in my opinion, this is the rare show that ended at the perfect time, telling a well-crafted story before stepping off the digital stage.

Will you agree that this Emmy-winning show lives up to over a decade of hype, or is Gravity Falls a show that you’d like to throw back into the Mystery Shack? You won’t know until you stream it on Disney+ and experience its every twist and turn for yourself. Just be careful, parents: you may be tempted to binge the show in its action-packed entirety while the kids are at school!
