While countless fans would do just about anything to see Bob Dylan live in a small, intimate setting, one of the iconic musician’s captive audiences definitely didn’t appreciate having the chance to witness his genius up close.
In 2007, a group of kindergarteners got their first taste of Dylan’s music when the Grammy-winning legend paid a series of visits to their Calabasas, Calif. classroom to play some acoustic tunes. This wasn’t just any kindergarten class — Dylan’s grandson, the child of his youngest son, Jakob Dylan, was a student at the school — but that apparently didn’t help to prepare them for the experience.
As a source told the celebrity.land at the time, “The kids have been coming home and telling their parents about the weird man who keeps coming to class to sing scary songs on his guitar,” per Far Out Magazine.
“He’s been visiting the school just for fun, but the kids don’t appreciate they are in the presence of a musical legend. They just think of him as the weird guitar guy,” the source continued.
Bob Dylan is a devoted father and grandparent
While Dylan’s kindergarten concerts clearly weren’t all that kid-friendly, as a father of six, the singer-songwriter has plenty of experience with little ones. He shares five children — Maria, Jesse, Anna, Sam and Jakob — with his ex-wife Sara Lownds and one daughter, Desiree, with his ex-wife Carolyn Dennis, according to People.
Though Dylan’s family tends to be private, Jakob opened up about his early years as Dylan’s son in 2000, telling the Los Angeles Times, “I know people have this image of how rough it is growing up in a famous family. But it really didn’t seem that big a deal at the time. I had friends. I had a home. I had a family.”
In 2005, Jakob praised his father’s parenting skills in an interview with The New York Times.
“When I was a kid, he was a god to me for all the right reasons,” he said. “He never missed a single Little League game I had. He’s collected every home run ball I ever hit. And he’s still affectionate to me.”
While it’s not clear which of Jakob’s children was in the aforementioned kindergarten class, he shares four sons with his wife Paige. As of 2017, his son Levi was working as a model, according to TIME, walking the Dolce & Gabbana runway alongside other children of celebrities including Rafferty Law (son of Jude Law), Presley Gerber (son of Cindy Crawford) and Brandon Lee (son of Tommy Lee).
