The future of the hit series Peacemaker may not be quite as cut-and-dry as fans hoped. While the DC series, which airs on HBO Max, has earned rave reviews in its second season, the topic of a third season remains an interesting question mark. John Cena’s portrayal of the popular character has been nothing short of impressive, and DC Studios’ co-CEO and director James Gunn has spoken several times about how much he loves Season 2 of Peacemaker.
So, all things considered, it’s surely a no-brainer that Season 3 is a full-go, right? Gunn’s latest comments on the topic were noteworthy and may have cast some doubt regarding the future plans for Peacemaker, or at the very least for some characters.
James Gunn’s Latest Comments on ‘Peacemaker’ Season 3
While the revamped DC Studios have several upcoming releases and even bigger plans beyond that, it’s not surprising that Gunn didn’t give a clear-cut answer about Peacemaker Season 3. However, during an interview with Collider, the Superman director’s response to the question of whether the third season is in development primarily focused on the “plans for characters” that extend beyond the show.
Fortunately, Gunn did add that the eighth episode of the current Peacemaker season should help to answer some questions about Season 3 plans.
“It is not [in development] right now,” Gunn said. “…That doesn’t mean there aren’t plans for these characters, but it’s not necessarily Season 3 of Peacemaker. And then people should watch Episode 8 to see what happens, because maybe some of your questions will be answered in that episode by itself.”
Whether this means the show itself may have a conclusion this season, or something entirely different, it was an interesting response from Gunn. On a positive note, it appears that several characters from the show are likely to have roles in other upcoming projects. Considering how widespread the appreciation of Cena’s work as Peacemaker is, along with the rest of the cast that meshes so well, that in itself is a win.
Here’s to hoping Gunn’s hint that episode eight clears the air on this topic lives up to the billing. But after his previous teases, including Lex Luthor’s surprise cameo, which he referenced in various fashions previously, it’s a safe bet that there’ll be clarity about Peacemaker’s future in the Oct. 9 season finale.
