Fans are raving over One Battle After Another, which features stellar performances from Teyana Taylor, Leonardo DiCaprio, and Regina Hall. But fans of the latter’s filmography noticed something extra special about this particular movie.
In One Battle After Another, Hall plays Deandra, a member of a far-left revolutionary group called the French 75. Also in the French 75 is a woman named Junglepussy, played by Shayna McHayle — who, in addition to acting, also raps under the stage name Junglepussy in real life. Those who are familiar with both artists’ work know that this isn’t McHayle and Hall’s first time working together.
Back in 2018, the two starred in an independent movie called Support the Girls. In Support the Girls, Hall plays Lisa, the manager of a Hooters-esque sports bar called Double Whammies. McHayle plays Danyelle, a single mother who works as a waitress at Double Whammies. Though Support the Girls didn’t receive a major studio release, the movie has garnered a cult following and earned Hall the New York Film Critics Circle Award for Best Actress — making her the first African American to win the award.
Fans who noticed this mini-reunion took to social media to express their excitement.
“No one is discussing how One Battle After Another is low key a Support the Girls (2018) reunion film,” wrote one fan on X.
“Part of me wishes Haley Lu Richardson had played Alana Haim’s part in ONE BATTLE AFTER ANOTHER so we could have had a full-blown SUPPORT THE GIRLS reunion,” wrote another.
One fan even said they “bought a ticket for Support The Girls 2”
Since its nationwide theatrical release on Friday, Sept. 25, One Battle After Another has received a positive reception from critics. It is expected to earn $21 million in its opening weekend.
