The Reading Royals have announced that they’ve signed forward Alec Butcher for the 2025-26 season. Butcher, 31, had 18 goals and 20 assists for 38 points in 66 games last season with the Tulsa Oilers. He would add a goal in five games during the Kelly Cup Playoffs. This will be Butcher’s second stint in Reading after putting up 25 goals and 31 assists for 56 points in 86 games during the 2022-23 and 2023-24 seasons before being traded to Tulsa. Butcher brings some much-needed experience to the Royals’ 2025-26 season roster. With the signing of Butcher, the Royals now have 12 forwards and 20 players signed for the 2025-26 season.

The Anchorage, Alaska, native is entering his seventh season in the ECHL, as he’s spent time with the Wheeling Nailers, Rapid City Rush, Reading Royals, and Tulsa Oilers. He’s put up 111 goals and 122 assists for 233 points in 367 games. Butcher had back-to-back 20-goal seasons in 20222 and 2023. In 31 career Kelly Cup Playoff games, Butcher has four goals and seven assists for 11 points.

“Alec is an experienced player in our league,” stated Anthony Peters, Head Coach & General Manager. “He has consistently been able to score goals throughout his career. We will rely on him to score goals, play hard, and lead by example.”

Prior to going pro, Butcher spent parts of two seasons in the NAHL with the Kenai River Brown Bears, where he put up 34 goals and 62 assists for 96 points in 101 games. He would add three goals and six assists for nine points in 10 playoff games. During his only full season with the Brown Bears, Butcher put up 24 goals and 42 assists for 66 points in 60 games. He would ultimately be named the NAHL MVP, leading the league in assists and points. Butcher then went to the NCAA, where he played four seasons at Sacred Heart University. In 95 games with the Pioneers, he put 16 goals and 36 assists for 52 points.
