I’m still having a problem wrestling with the fact that The Simpsons Movie not only happened, but it actually arrived back in 2007. Delivering a movie people were prone to thinking wouldn’t happen, it was actually a pretty impressive result that won over even some of the most jaded fans. In the wake of that picture’s arrival, the long running Fox sitcom made another one of its infamous predictions – and it looks like it’s (technically) come true.
Through various social media platforms, 20th Century Studios broke the news that The Simpsons will be heading back to theaters again! Scheduled for release on July 23, 2027, the studio shared that announcement through this clever teaser graphic:
Naturally, no plot details have been shared when it comes to The Simpsons Movie 2, or whatever this cinematic venture ends up being named. Personally, I think “The Wrath of (Sideshow) Bob” certainly has a nice ring to it; but the funny thing with Matt Groening’s creation is there’s no telling where their story is headed next.
Unless you’re a person who loves to pick out those instances where the 36 season animation landmark oddly predicted the future. In which case, you probably called out everything but the exact day this new project would debut. For anyone scratching their head right now, check out this screenshot from Season 19’s Premiere, “He Loves To Fly, and He D’ohs”:
The first episode to premiere after The Simpsons Movie’s July 27, 2007 opening day, the then 18 year old series set a goal. Now since the benchmark was to “not wait 20 years to make another movie,” and with the presumption that a script is actually done and dusted, the residents of Springfield seem to have made history yet again.
That is, if there aren’t any production start delays or hiccups. Knock on all the wood you want, as The Simpsons Movie 2 (title pending) is set to debut on July 23, 2027 – only in theaters. Those of you looking for your weekly dose of Springfield shenanigans can enjoy The Simpsons in the meantime, with Season 37 debuting new episodes every Sunday at 8 PM ET on Fox – arriving on Hulu not too long after, for the streaming crowd.
