After his “two-wheel Cadillac let him down,” New Orleans bluesman Little Freddie King is currently in the hospital and recovering from a fall, his drummer and manager “Wacko” Wade Wright says.
King Sept. 19 was riding his new, electric bicycle near his home in Musicians’ Village when he had stopped to adjust the bike. After his foot accidentally hit the pedal, King was thrown off and injured his arm, hand and leg. King, who’s 85, was hurt, but he’s recovering and is expected to be able to go home in the near future, Wright says.
“He’s active and feisty,” Wright adds, but King will have to work with doctors to get strength back in his injured arm and hand before he’s back on stage.
“It’s just kind of a wait and see” right now, Wright says.
The iconic guitarist and his band were scheduled to play the Crescent City Blues & BBQ Festival on Oct. 12. But the fall means he’s had to bow out of that show, along with a dozen other gigs in October, Wright says. Blues guitarist Vasti Jackson, who is King’s nephew, will play his festival slot at 5:45 p.m. Oct. 12 on the Camp Street Stage.
It’s unclear when King will resume his regular schedule of performances.
This isn’t King’s first brush with the hospital after a two-wheel Cadillac accident. In October 2017, he was seriously injured while bicycling on Poland Avenue. He was wearing a helmet, but his spinal cord was compressed, which impacted his arms and hands. He declined surgery and instead exercised his hands with a massage ball to regain strength.
