Season 1 of the Apple TV+ series ‘Schmigadoon!’ paid tribute to musicals like ‘Brigadoon,’ ‘The Music Man,’ and ‘The Sound of Music.’

Welcome to Schmigadoon! — once again. The beloved musical comedy series is coming back in a big new way! After a two season run on Apple TV+, the show that paid tribute to iconic musicals is going to Broadway as a live stage production.

Here’s everything you need to know about the original TV show before seeing the adapted version on stage!

What is ‘Schmigadoon!’?

Created by Cinco Paul, Schmigadoon! is a musical comedy series that aired on Apple TV+ from 2021 to 2023. The show follows married doctors Josh (Keegan-Michael Key) and Melissa (Cecily Strong), who start of the first season by going on a couple’s backpacking retreat meant to reignite their relationship. While in the woods, they stumble upon a magical town called Schmigadoon, where people live like they are in a Golden Age musical.

Season one features characters like a closeted minister, a beautiful schoolmarm, and a rebellious drifter satirizing the songs of iconic musicals like Brigadoon, The Music Man, The Sound of Music, and Oklahoma!.

Both seasons of the show ran for six episodes.

Who starred in ‘Schmigadoon!’?

In addition to Key and Strong, Schmigadoon! also stars Fred Armisen, Dove Cameron, Jaime Camil, Kristin Chenoweth, Alan Cumming, Ariana DeBose, Ann Harada, Jane Krakowski, Martin Short, and Aaron Tveit.

Was there a ‘Schmigadoon!’ season 2?

Season 2 of Schmigadoon! takes place in a town called Schmicago and pays tribute to the dark and sexy musicals of the 1960s and ’70s. In addition to most of the season 1 cast — minus Armisen — the sophomore season stars series newcomers Tituss Burgess and Patrick Page. Among the musicals that it parodies are Pippin, Chicago, Cabaret, Godspell, and Jesus Christ Superstar.

Will there be a ‘Schmigadoon!’ season 3?

Schmigadoon! was canceled after two seasons at the start of 2024. “I am sad to share that Apple will not be moving forward with Season 3 of Schmigadoon!” Paul wrote on Instagram at the time. “The season is written (including 25 new songs) but we unfortunately won’t be making it. Such is life.”

Will there be a stage version of ‘Schmigadoon!’?

After Apple TV+ cancelled Schmigadoon! , Paul put on a stage adaptation of the show at the Kennedy Center for a limited run in January 2025. The stage version featured three new songs, and covered the events of the first season.

Now, that version of the show is officially coming to Broadway in 2026, per Entertainment Weekly. The Schmigadoon! musical will begin previews at New York’s Nederlander Theatre on April 4, with opening night set for April 20. The show is scheduled to run through September 6.

“Schmigadoon is a love letter to the Golden Age of movie musicals,” producer Lorne Michaels said in a statement to EW. “It’s a little bit nostalgic and a lot of fun. We’re very excited to bring it to Broadway.”

Does the stage version of ‘Schmigadoon!’ have the same cast as the TV show?

In the Kennedy Center performances of Schmigadoon!, Harada reprised her role as Florence Menlove, but the rest of the cast was new. The musical starred Alex Brightman (Beetlejuice: The Musical) as Josh, Sara Chase (Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt) as Melissa, and Ryan Vasquez as Danny Bailey — as well as Kevin Del Aguila, McKenzie Kurtz, Isabelle McCalla, Javier Muñoz, Brad Oscar, and Emily Skinner.

It is unknown if that cast will return for the Broadway version.
