Stephen Colbert got into how he found out that his long-running Late Show was canceled during his appearance on Tuesday’s episode of Jimmy Kimmel Live!
This summer CBS announced that the Late Show with Stephen Colbert would be ending in 2026. After Stephen confirmed the disappointing news, many fans were outraged and demanded the television network reverse their choice, which they haven’t. With his show being on the verge of ending, he has shared when he learned the fate of his show.
Stephen divulged that his manager didn’t tell him of the news for a week because he was on vacation. However, he was told the situatiion during one 15-minute conversation after an episode of his show.
Jimmy admitted that he was at the No Kings protest with his wife and children when he found at that his network series was being canceled.
Trying to show that he was still on Stephen’s side, Jimmy claimed that no one “had any balls” when it came telling him that his show was about to be over.
Stephen went on to explain that the first person he told about his cancellation was his wife, who insisted he inform his staff right away.
“[Stephen’s wife] said, ‘Are you going to tell the staff?’” he remembered. “I said, ‘I don’t know. Maybe I will tell them after the summer break.’ She said, ‘You are going to tell them tomorrow.’ I said, ‘I don’t think so.’ She said, ‘I am coming to work with you tomorrow because I think you are telling your staff.’ I get up in the elevator. I had sweat through my shirt. I didn’t want to know anything my staff didn’t know.”
Initially, Stephen admitted he only told his executive producers so it wouldn’t affect the rest of the employees amid taping. However, when the episode wrapped, Stephen told the crew and the audience, “Nobody leave. We have one more act of the show.”
Even though the stage manager had said “we are done,” Stephen disputed.
“I said, ‘No, there is one more act of the show. Please don’t let the audience go.’ [the stage manager] said, ‘No, boss, we are done.’ I said, ‘I am aware of that. I am here to tell you there is one more act of the show,'” Stephen explained.
Stephen admitted that he was so nervous about breaking the news. He shared that when he first took the stage to make the announcement, the audience was chuckling, thinking it was a bit. However, when he said what he needed to, no one laughed.
“I was so nervous about doing it,” Stephen explained. “There was nothing on the prompter. I fucked up twice. I had to restart, and the audience thought it was a bit. They started going, ‘You can do it. Come on Steve. You can do it.’ I always messed up on the sentence that told them what was happening. I got to the sentence that told them what was happening, and they didn’t laugh. They didn’t laugh. That is it. That is how I did
