Charlize Theron is encountering criticism following remarks she made regarding co-star Matt Damon’s physical appearance while discussing The Odyssey.
The Academy Award-winning actress, who portrays Calypso alongside Damon’s Odysseus in Christopher Nolan’s forthcoming film, candidly addressed the actor’s look during a recent interview. When discussing Damon’s preparation for the character, Theron expressed admiration for his physical condition.
“I’ve seen him without all of that suit on. He’s incredible. Incredible,” she told Entertainment Tonight. Theron continued, jokingly acknowledging she found herself focusing on more than simply his acting while working on The Odyssey, which was just released this week.
“I’m like staring at him weirdly. I’m looking at his a- right now. I shouldn’t do that! That’s just wrong,” she said with a laugh. “He looked amazing, yes.”
The statements generated controversy on social media, with some characterizing them as unsuitable considering Damon has been married to his wife, Luciana Barroso, since 2005. Others, however, viewed the remark as innocent and consistent with Theron’s characteristically straightforward demeanor.

The duo have worked together before. Theron and Damon previously appeared in the 2000 film The Legend of Bagger Vance, where they portrayed romantic interests.
Their collaboration on The Odyssey represents more than twenty years since that production. Damon’s physical transformation for the role has sparked widespread conversation, with the actor reportedly reducing his weight from 200 pounds to 167 pounds in preparation for portraying the Greek king.
He has been candid about the commitment necessary to achieve the physique, stressing that it focused less on appearance and more on complete physical conditioning.

“It was more about just getting really, really physically fit, which just really involves changing your diet, just a whole lifestyle change,” he told People. “You have to just be very, very intentional about everything you’re putting in your body.”
The actor also discussed the difficulties of sustaining that fitness level at his age during a conversation on Amy Poehler’s “Good Hang” podcast.
“It’s way different to be getting jacked in your 50s. It’s really hard. It’s just a complete, complete lifestyle change,” he said. “Just put your feet on the gas, and that’s it. And that’s the only way to do it and eat a little less, no gluten, which changed my life.”
Damon further described how eliminating gluten had a significant effect on his well-being and everyday life.
“I didn’t realize the level to which it was affecting me and affecting my life. It’s completely changed my life these last couple of years of not eating it,” he continued. “It’s a bummer. I’m a big fan of bread and beer, and you know pasta and pizza and all that stuff, but how I feel is just so much better.”
