Clayface star Max Minghella has teased the DC film will feature plenty of body horror elements.

The 40-year-old actor was recently added to the cast of the upcoming DC Universe (DCU) flick as the character John, and Minghella has now promised Clayface won’t go easy on the body horror.

Speaking with Collider, The Social Network star shared: “I think I can say safely it’s going there. It’s a proper movie. It’s a really fantastic script.”

Clayface – who is a member of Batman’s Rogues Gallery – will be helmed by director James Watkins, and Minghella had nothing but praise for the 52-year-old filmmaker.

He said of Watkins: I think talking to the actors with that amount of focus and care is quite extraordinary. He just sees everything you’re doing, so I really admire that, and I hope to steal that.

“It’s a great group of people. [Cinematographer] Rob Hardy’s shooting it; he’s amazing. I hope it’s going to be cool. I hope you guys like it when it comes out.”

The Babylon actor added he was “so excited” to work with Watkins, and had been a big fan of his 2008 psychological horror movie Eden Lake.

Minghella said: “I saw that movie when it came out, and it deeply affected me, so I was excited to get that call. I think he’s really kind of uniquely suited to it [Clayface], to be honest.

“If you look at his whole resume, he’s worked in all these different spaces that sort of equal the movie we’re making, so I can’t imagine anybody else doing it.

“I’m learning a lot from working with him, which is always my favorite thing. He comes and talks to us after everything we do, every take.

“I could be clicking a keyboard and he comes in and talks to me afterwards, and there’s just an attention to detail, which is really lovely.”

Minghella also confirmed that he was “working on Clayface right now in London” ahead of its September 2026 release.

Clayface – which was written by Doctor Sleep’s Mike Flanagan – follows B-movie actor Matt Hagen (Tom Rhys Harries) as his life is changed forever when his face gets disfigured by a gangster.

The young actor desperately seeks out a scientist for help, and while the experiment is initially a success, things take a sinister turn when he begins to morph into a hulking monster.

Clayface is also set to star Naomi Ackie as scientist Elizabeth Holmes.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Clayface will be a “stripped down movie”, with a budget of approximately $40 million.

Recently, DC head James Gunn, 59, commented on the set photos from Clayface that had made their way online, and the choice to use digital instead of practical effects.

During an appearance on The Morning After Pod, The Peacemaker creator said: “You know, we knew we were shooting outside.

“We knew there would be some photos that would get out and we knew there was some makeup and stuff involved and they’re like, ‘Oh, should we not put any of the makeup on and then just do it with visual effects and post?’ And I’m like, what are you talking about? I mean, is it going to make $1 less at the box office?’

“You know, first of all, if some photos leak, and then secondly, like I you want to spend, you know, hundreds of thousands of dollars on VFX when it’s going to look better if it’s practical because there’s a lot of amazing practical effects in Clayface.”
