Prince George is preparing for a major milestone as he gets ready to begin life at Eton College this September. According to a new report by, Prince William and Kate Middleton have no issue with one of the prestigious school’s strictest rules, as it closely matches their own parenting approach.

Prince George celebrates his 13th birthday on July 22 before heading off to Eton College, the same prestigious boarding school his father attended. As the future King prepares for secondary school, one long-standing rule at Eton appears to have the full support of Prince William and Princess Kate.

According to the outlet, first-year students at Eton are not allowed to carry smartphones. Instead, they can only use a basic “brick phone” to stay in touch with their families. While the rule may seem unusual in an era dominated by smartphones, it reportedly fits perfectly with the Prince and Princess of Wales’ approach to raising their children.

Prince William previously revealed that Prince George, Princess Charlotte, and Prince Louis do not own mobile phones. During an appearance on Eugene Levy’s travel series “The Reluctant Traveler”, the Prince of Wales explained that he and Kate are “very strict” about limiting technology at home.

The couple’s stance has remained consistent over the years. During a visit to Brazil for the Earthshot Prize, William shared that George might receive a simple phone with limited features once he started secondary school.

“It is really hard. Our children don’t have phones,” William said at the time. “When George moves onto secondary school, maybe he’ll have one with limited access.”

Royal editor and author Russell Myers told The Telegraph that William and Kate remain highly protective of their children. Also, they want George to enjoy his school experience. He noted that although William had happy memories from his years at Eton, both parents understand that growing up in today’s digital world presents different challenges.

William has also explained that he and Kate regularly discuss internet safety with George. The couple believes children should understand why certain limits exist rather than simply having rules imposed on them.

“We talk to George and explain why we don’t think it’s right,” William previously said. He added that unrestricted internet access can expose children to content they should not see. However, he acknowledged that phones can still be useful for messaging when proper controls are in place.
