A few weeks before Keith Urban’s split from Nicole Kidman made headline news, the country star covered Loverboy’s 1981 hit “Turn Me Loose” in his show on Sept. 12 at the Scotiabank Saddledome in Calgary, Alberta, Canada and fans are wondering if he was telegraphing his pending divorce.
It’s the only time that Urban has performed the song live and although the song’s title could suggest Urban’s current state of mind, there’s likely another reason he performed the song. Calgary, Alberta is the hometown of the 1980s hitmakers Loverboy, who had a big hit with the song in 1981, when it reached No. 6 on Billboard’s Top Rock Tracks chart.
What are the lyrics of ‘Turn Me Loose’?
The song contains the lyrics:
“And I was here to please / I’m even on knees / Makin’ love to whoever I please / I gotta do it my way / Or no way at all / And then you came around / Tried to tie me down / I was such a clown / You had to have it your way / Or no way at all / Well I’ve had all I can take / I can’t take it no more / I’m gonna pack my bags and fly, baby / Or no way at all”
Despite the connection to Loverboy’s hometown, some fans seemed convinced that Urban was sending a message by adding the song to his set in his encore, prior to the set-closing cover of the New Radicals’ “You Get What You Give.” Unlike “Turn Me Loose,” which Urban has only played once on this tour, he’s been performing the New Radicals’ song regularly in his live set.
What some fans are saying about Keith Urban’s Loverboy cover
Loverboy shared fan-shot video of Urban performing on their official Facebook account and fans in the comments shared their thoughts.
“Oh he sure turned Nicole loose,” wrote one.
“A foretelling of the pending divorce,” added another.
“He was sending Nicole a message, looks like she got it loud and clear. #turnmeloose,” added another.
On Sept. 30, just a day after news broke of the couple’s separation, Kidman filed for divorce, despite sources insisting she had been fighting to save their marriage.
The news was confirmed by People.
Kidman, 58, and Urban, 57, married in 2006 a year after they met in Los Angeles. They share two daughters – Sunday Rose and Faith Margaret.
Urban’s current tour continues on Oct. 2 at Giant Center in Hershey, Penn. and runs through Oct. 17 at the Bridgestone Arena in Nashville before launching international dates in March with the Top Shelf Country Cruise in Nassau Bahamas.
