A first-look set photo from Avengers: Doomsday has emerged – leaving fans with a whole range of feelings. The tease was posted by directors the Russo brothers, who shared the mysterious picture on Instagram.
In it, we see an unidentified silhouetted figure sitting in the middle of a set, with the directors urging fans in the caption to “look hard”.
Many have been trying to decode the mystery – which harks back to the pair’s similar stunt before Endgame in which a post cryptically revealed the 2019 movie’s title – though some have been left scratching their heads.
“Brothers I can’t see shit,” one fan joked on Reddit in reference to the darkly lit monochrome picture, another quipping on Instagram: “Ok, I tried to look hard but passed out from furrowing my brow too much. Am awaiting further instructions.”
Some others shared their frustration by linking back to their Endgame stunt, one writing on Reddit: “Not this shit again,” another adding: “Oh great. It’s one of these hints again.”

Away from the confusion, however, many others expressed excitement over what the teaser could mean, a fan speculating: “This is surely Avengers vs X-men. I see A | X rather than A v X, but still, a clear separation exists between an A and an X to me.”

As theories do the rounds, one of the movie’s stars – Chris Hemsworth – recently shut down speculation that Thor could be killed off in Doomsday after he shared a compilation post about his character and thanked fans.

“I was [already] off starting another chapter of this character, and this journey has been the biggest part of my career,” he told The Hollywood Reporter. “So [the video] was a moment of gratitude, and it wasn’t anything else. But it definitely got misconstrued and perceived in a different way.”
Doomsday, which is due out next year, features an all-star Marvel cast including Robert Downey Jr – this time playing villain Dr Doom – and will be followed by Avengers: Secret Wars in 2027.
Avengers: Doomsday is released in cinemas on 18 December 2026. All four Avengers movies are streaming on Disney+.
