The Simpsons are coming to the big screen. Again.
On Monday evening, it was revealed that the long-running animated sitcom would be getting a second spin-off film, bringing Homer, Marge, Bart, Lisa, Maggie and their Springfield neighbours back to cinemas.
Disney – the media conglomerate which has owned The Simpsons since 2017 – announced the news in a social media post depicting the iconic’ family’s patriarch reaching for a doughnut covered in sprinkles shaped like the number two.
“Homer’s coming back for seconds,” the poster teased, alongside a release date of 23 July 2027, almost 20 years to the day since the first film premiered in Springfield, Vermont.
The Simpsons initially began life as a series of short cartoons on Tracey Ullman’s US variety show, before getting their own stand-alone series, which became one of the most revered and influential of the 1990s and 2000s.
A first Simpsons film, the imaginatively-titled The Simpsons Movie, was released in 2007, receiving mostly positive reviews and going on to rank among the highest-grossing movies of all time.
In addition to appearances from the likes of Tom Hanks, Albert Brooks and Green Day, The Simpsons Movie introduced new characters like Colin, a love interest for Lisa, and the family’s pet pig Plopper, though neither of these remained as permanent characters in the show.
Variety has pointed out that the new Simpsons sequel will occupy a slot on Disney’s release schedule previously occupied by an undisclosed Marvel film.
Since The Simpsons became a Disney property, the show has received several stand-alone shorts on the company’s streaming platform Disney+ (including several crossovers with characters from the Disney and Marvel universes).
Last year, it also received its first bumper-length streaming-only episode in the 2024 Christmas special O C’Mon All Ye Faithful.
The Simpsons and The Simpsons Movie are available to stream now on Disney+.
