The lineup for Austin City Limits Music Festival is already stacked with big names, but some fans are convinced an even bigger star could show up: Taylor Swift.
Swift’s 12th studio album, “The Life of a Showgirl,” is scheduled to drop as the clock strikes midnight on Friday, Oct. 3 (11 p.m. on Thursday for those in Austin) and fans are theorizing the pop star could make a surprise appearance at Zilker Park to celebrate.
Where did the theory come from?
The theory gained traction on social media after Swift’s team posted a release calendar that instructs fans to “standby” for the star’s Saturday night plans — conveniently, the same time frame for Sabrina Carpenter to take the ACL Fest stage as a headliner. Carpenter features on the title track of Swift’s new album, and some fans think Swift could join Carpenter to perform the new song live for the first time.
Tiktok and Reddit threads have only added to the buzz.
Some users noted that Kansas City Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce, who proposed to Swift in August, doesn’t play until Monday night.
Others joked that the album’s orange theme could be a reference to the University of Texas at Austin’s signature burnt orange.
Is it possible?
An ACL appearance by Taylor Swift would break the internet — and maybe even the festival itself — but Swifties shouldn’t hold their breath.
Considering her jam-packed schedule and the open-air nature of the event, Swift is likely not dropping by. But speculations are still swirling, and there’s no denying that Swift has something up her sleeve for Saturday night.
Confirmed album release plans
Even if Saturday night’s “standby” instructions turn out to be unrelated to ACL, fans of Swift still have a lot to look forward to this weekend.
“The Official Release Party of a Showgirl” premieres in theaters on Friday and continues through the weekend. The music video for her single, “The Fate of Ophelia,” and the lyric video for the album’s title track, “The Life of a Showgirl,” both premiere on Youtube at 6 p.m. CT on Sunday, Oct. 5.
Swift is also scheduled to appear on multiple talk shows to promote the album, including:
The Graham Norton Show: Oct. 3 at 4:40 p.m. CT
The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon: Oct. 6 at 10:35 p.m. CT
Late Night with Seth Meyers: Oct. 8 at 11:35 CT
In Austin, there will be listening parties across town for Swifties who want to come together and enjoy the new album.
