Meghan Markle’s father has responded after his daughter, Samantha, alleged he was “trapped” in his Philippines home following a significant earthquake.
Samantha, the Duchess of Sussex’s half-sister, took to social media on Wednesday, claiming that their father was trapped in his high-rise apartment and unable to leave due to the 6.9-magnitude quake that struck Cebu province Tuesday night.
However, Thomas has now spoken out about his situation, assuring everyone that he is “fine” and not ‘trapped’ or ‘unable to walk’.
Speaking to TMZ after his daughter’s tweets, Mr. Markle said, “Please don’t worry about me. Everything is okay,” and expressed gratitude for the concern for his well-being.
He clarified that he is safe in his hotel room and is neither “trapped” nor “unable to walk”. He explained that his hotel was unaffected by the quake, adding: “The epicenter was 100 miles from here.”
Just hours later, she made her X account private. Later on Wednesday, she provided a further update, saying he is now “OK, and making plans to get out of that building.”
Thomas, 80, who is estranged from the Duchess of Sussex, relocated to the Philippines earlier this year, where he is being cared for by Meghan’s half-brother, Tom. Mr Markle is said to have suffered two heart attacks and a stroke in recent years and now must contend with the tropical island’s brutal heat.
The regional Emmy award-winner was spotted using a walking stick to help him navigate the area’s rough roads and paths, many of which are impacted by relentless traffic and the harsh climate.
Prince Harry has never met his father-in-law, but did speak to him on the phone before he married Meghan in May 2018 and asked for his daughter’s hand in marriage.
Thomas was scheduled to walk the former Suits actress down the aisle at the Windsor Castle ceremony, but revealed how he was forced to withdraw on doctors’ orders after two heart attacks resulted in his hospitalization and having two stents inserted days before the ceremony. The medical incident followed a controversy involving Thomas Sr.
, who was caught in staged paparazzi photos prior to the event. He confided in friends that his choice to start anew in the Philippines was driven by his desire for “peace” and “kinder people”.
