Actress and political activist Jane Fonda eviscerated Democratic leaders during an appearance on celebrity.land discussing the relaunch of the Red Scare-era free speech advocacy group, the Committee for the First Amendment.
The Barbarella star appeared on Inside Politics with Dana Bash on Wednesday, October 1, to discuss the movement, expressing concerns over Donald Trump‘s threats to deploy troops to major US cities and weaponizing the presidency to censor his critics, like Jimmy Kimmel.
Jane says the current Democratic leadership is ‘not good enough’ at protecting free speech or pushing back against Trump’s ‘regime,‘ adding, ‘If you can’t change the people, change the people.’
The actress discussed the relaunch of the McCarthy-era activist group, the Committee for the First Amendment, which was founded in 1947 by Hollywood actors, including her father, Henry Fonda. The group pushed back against the House Un-American Activities Committee, which blacklisted artists over their political views or who were suspected of communism.
So far, dozens of Hollywood stars have joined the movement, including J.J. Abrams, Anne Hathaway, Quinta Brunson, Natalie Portman, Ben Stiller, and Billie Eilish, among others.
“No president has ever sent troops into the Democratic cities across the country saying full force. No president, as far as I know, has tried to control the Federal Reserve, the central bank. He is amassing power in a way that will destroy our democracy,” Jane explained.
“And so we’re going to stand up. We’re creatives. We’re storytellers. We can do it creatively. We can have a good time while we do it,” noting that the movement will be decidedly nonviolent. “We don’t want any of that, but we want we want move forward with love with unity, with solidarity,” she said.
When asked how she felt the current Democratic leadership was doing, Jane answered bluntly, “Not good enough.”

The 87-year-old Hollywood star went on to say, “I don’t feel that our leaders are doing what they need to do. If you can’t change the people, change the people. That’s what we’re doing.”
This isn’t her first rodeo. The Monster-in-Law star has been engaged in political activism for decades, most notably during the Vietnam War and the Civil Rights Movement.
“Hanoi Jane is free to share whatever bad opinions she wants,” a White House spokesperson responded to the growing movement. “As someone who actually knows what it’s like to be censored, President Trump is a strong supporter of free speech and Democrat [sic] allegations to the contrary are so false, they’re laughable.”
