With lunch break over, defense attorney Brian Steel is now addressing the judge.
Sean “Diddy” Combs has impacted so many people in such a positive manner, and Steel is wondering how it came to this, Steel said.
“I sit here with tears in my eyes because I can’t believe we’re here,” Steel said.
“Please consider the following two reasons I believe we’re here: untreated trauma — great trauma in Sean’s life — and a ferocious drug addiction that got out of hand.”
Combs’ father was killed when Combs was 3, Steel said, “and Sean has no memory of his father. I can’t imagine,” Steel said. “A few years later, his uncle — his mother’s brother — overdosed on drugs, a drug addiction that later in life would haunt also Sean.”
Steel said Combs’ mother worked three jobs to raise money and move the family to Mount Vernon, New York.
“Sean’s family was one of the only African American families in the area, so for the first time Sean encountered racism,” he said.
