GWINNETT COUNTY, Ga. (WKRC) – Shortly after being purchased by a large entertainment company, two beloved theme parks will shut their doors for good.

Malibu Norcross in Gwinnett County, Georgia and Mountasia Mariette in Cobb County, Georgia were closed for good on September 28 after decades of service to their communities. The closure came just months after Dollywood’s parent company, Herschend Family Entertainment Corporation, purchased both parks as part of an acquisition of Palace Entertainment in May. The buyout included 24 parks and attractions in total.

“These centers have played an important role in their communities, and we’re incredibly grateful to the hosts who’ve created so many joyful memories for families,” said Herschend CEO Andrew Wexler while speaking to WSB. “This decision is in no way a reflection on the hosts or the quality of the experiences offered, but rather a recognition that Family Entertainment Centers operate differently than the types of attractions we are best structured to support.”

The parks updated their sites to reflect the closure, writing: “Thank you for the memories! Our final day of operation was Sunday, September 28. Thank you to our community, hosts, and our guests for making [Mountasia Marietta/Malibu Norcross] a place to create timeless memories for more than 20 years!”
