Role Model’s fans already were singing and screaming along to his hit “Sally, When the Wine Runs Out” on Friday afternoon at the Austin City Limits Music Festival.
They found a higher register when Sally ran onto the stage.

Bedroom pop singer Role Model (real name also known as Tucker Pillsbury) topped the Adult Alternative chart last month with “Sally,” a song about a dive-bar hook-up whom the singer hopes is attracted to him, not his liquor tab.
Role Model revs up the song in concert so it sounds like a rediscovered ’80s power-pop gem by the Romantics or Marshall Crenshaw.
It has become a tradition for the singer to bring someone onstage to dance during the song, both women from the audience and celebrities. Past Sallies, according to New York magazine, have included Kate Hudson, Olivia Rodrigo and “Saturday Night Live” cast member Bowen Yang.
On Friday, audience members gasped and shrieked when Texas native and “Younger” star Hilary Duff ran onstage wearing a denim miniskirt and boots like many of the young women in the crowd at Zilker Park. She danced with Role Model and gave him a hug before blowing the crowd a kiss and exiting the stage.
The former Disney Channel actress has famously played a Wendy and a Lizzie, but this appears to be her first Sally.
Role Model returns next Friday for Weekend 2 of the Austin City Limits Music Festival. Hilary Duff’s plans are as yet unknown.
