The Final Destination series was considered dead and buried after the financial underperformance of Final Destination 5, but if the movies taught us anything, it’s that Death never quits. Released in May 2025, 15 years after FD5, Final Destination: Bloodlines defied expectations and became the highest-grossing entry in the franchise by a country mile, grossing $314 million worldwide off a $50 million budget.
With the franchise fully revived, New Line Cinema (part of Warner Bros) immediately got to work on a sequel, getting Bloodlines co-writer Lori Evans Taylor currently writing the script. And now, according to THR, it looks like they’ve found the right director for the job.
While an official deal has yet to be made, all signs point to Michiel Blanchart as the person New Line has chosen for the job. Hailing from Belgium, Blanchart is a relative newcomer, but he made waves in his homeland with his feature film debut, Night Call (Le nuit se traine), a gritty crime thriller that won 11 prizes at the Magritte Awards, the Belgian Oscars. If all goes well, Final Destination 7 will turn Blanchart from a Belgian hometown hero into an international horror icon.
I loved Final Destination: Bloodlines, and a big part of that was due to the directing. How do I know this? Because I was visiting my brother in Ukraine at the time, and we saw the movie in Ukrainian, with no English subtitles, and I don’t speak a word of Ukrainian. Even so, I had a great time with the movie. As such, I’m a little nervous that directors Zach Lipovsky and Adam Stein aren’t returning, but I’m always excited to see what a new director can bring to a long-running series.
Final Destination 7 is currently without a release date, but I bet we’ll learn about casting soon.
