There’s No Better Day to Listen to New Music Than Friday, and These Playlists Prove It

Taylor Swift has released four limited edition CDs, each with extra acoustic versions of songs from ‘The Life Of A Showgirl’.

The pop giant’s 12th studio record was released on Friday (October 3), the follow-up to 2024’s ‘The Tortured Poets Department’, and the singer has already announced new bonus additions are on sale.

Writing on social media on Saturday night (October 4), Swift said she was filing this under “save your best for the finale”, adding: “I think my favorite moments from the tour were the acoustic surprises. So I went back into the studio with Max and Shellback to record acoustic/unplugged versions of a few of the Showgirl songs with brand new vocals and production! Cannot WAIT for you to hear.”

The four limited edition CDs each include the new album as well as two extra bonus tracks. The first, titled ‘Life Is A Song Acoustic Version’ includes ‘Opalite (Life Is A Song Acoustic Version)’ and ‘Ruin The Friendship (My Advice Version)’.

The ‘Dressing Room Rehearsal Version’ finishes with ‘Wi$h Li$t (Settled Down Acoustic Version)’ and ‘The Life Of A Showgirl (Dressing Room Rehearsal Acoustic Version)’, while the ‘Alone In My Tower Acoustic Version’ will include ‘The Fate Of Ophelia (Alone In My Tower Acoustic Version)’ and ‘Eldest Daughter (Now You’re Home Acoustic Version)’.

The final CD is titled ‘So Glamorous Cabaret Version’, with the bonus tracks ‘Elizabeth Taylor (So Glamorous Cabaret Version)’ and ‘Elizabeth Taylor (Original Songwriting Voice Memo)’.

Swift’s post was met with a range of reactions, with one fan replying: “Oh this is gorgeous-like you really said let’s strip the glitter off and show the heartbeat underneath. Acoustic versions always hit different, and pairing them with those behind-the-scenes style cuts and even a voice memo? That’s the kind of intimate final bow that makes a whole era feel like it’s living and breathing.”

However, another responded: “Every time I think she’s done squeezing the same songs, she finds a new ‘limited CD’ angle. Marketing genius or just exhausting at this point? Imagine releasing 4 versions of the same songs and calling it ‘artistic’ capitalism has never sounded so acoustic.”

Since the album’s release, fans have been flocking to share their theories about the meanings behind the songs, with the track ‘Actually Romantic’ being dissected particularly closely.

Many have interpreted it as a shot at Charli XCX and her apparent diss track ‘Sympathy Is A Knife’ from 2024’s ‘Brat’, although Swift has said it is “a song about realising that someone else has kind of had a one-sided, adversarial relationship with you that you didn’t know about. And all of a sudden they start doing too much and they start letting you know that actually, you’ve been living in their head rent-free and you had no idea.”

Fans have also been sharing their thoughts on the record, with some calling it “her best album” and the return of “pop perfection”, and others declaring it “the worst Taylor Swift album yet” and “boring and basic”. You can also explore the range of Easter eggs and references on the album here.

Swift has indicated that she has no intention of heading out on tour again anytime soon, after the gargantuan effort that went into her record-breaking ‘Eras’ tour.
