MOBILE, Ala. (WKRG) — Hamlet is known by actors as one of Shakespeare’s most challenging plays, but one local student took it head on, and one step further.
Davidson High School senior Sariah Hossain has been involved in local theatre for a few years and one day had what she called “a crazy idea.”
“I was thinking it would be really cool if we could do a production of Hamlet, but Hamlet is four hours long,” Hossain recalled.
The play requires much stamina and emotional range from the actors performing it, so much that even Hossain’s teacher thought it was out of reach.
“Sariah was a student of mine at an actor’s studio a couple of years ago,” Director Eric Browne explained. “I remember her coming to me and saying, ‘I really love Shakespeare, and I wish we did more of that in the community.’ Then she said, ‘I want to do a production of Hamlet, and I want to play Hamlet,’ and I’m going, ‘Well sure kid. Keep dreaming.’”
Some things, though, are just meant “to be.” Hossain dreamed up her own nonprofit organization that gives young aspiring actors, like herself, the opportunity to take center stage in productions like Hamlet.
“Over the two years, I’ve spent time trying to get people to be interested in maybe directing, acting, cutting the script, and giving us a space to work at,” Hossain said.
All of her hard work paid off this weekend as Invictus Artists’ Guild debuted its first production. It was the play that sparked the idea, Hamlet, and the main character was played by none other than the girl whose dream started it all.
“Like imagine three years ago seeing a 14-year-old me with this crazy pipe dream about having a theatre company and putting on Hamlet which is literally Shakespeare’s longest play, playing Hamlet,” Hossain said. “It sounds insane, but you start with what you have in reach.”
