Candidates for New Orleans mayor will take part in a forum Oct. 8 focused specifically on the city’s music economy.

New Orleans is rich in musical talent, but the city’s music industry infrastructure — things ranging from music licensing support and career development to more talent agencies, labels and publishers — has long lagged behind other hubs like Nashville and Atlanta. And at Wednesday’s forum, local musicians and industry professionals will ask candidates about their ideas to help grow and develop the New Orleans music economy.

“New Orleans’ next mayor needs to recognize the power and potential of music and develop a strategy befitting it,” said Nate Cameron, an industry professional who will emcee the event.

The forum, “Music Swings Votes,” starts at 7 p.m. at the George and Joyce Wein Jazz & Heritage Center and will be presented by The Recording Academy, Louisiana Music Partners, the Music and Culture Coalition of New Orleans and the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Foundation.

The event will be live-streamed on social media, with video production by students from Loyola University New Orleans’ College of Music and Media. Find more information at facebook.com/musicswingsvotes.

The New Orleans general election for mayor, city council, sheriff and other city positions is Saturday, Oct. 11. Voters can find their polling location and a sample ballot at geauxvote.com.

It’s a crucial election as the city faces a number of challenges, and there’s a lot at stake for those in New Orleans’ cultural communities. In September, Gambit spoke with a several musicians and industry professionals, artists and venue owners about their thoughts on the mayoral race and what they hoped to hear from candidates.

Read that story here.

We also sent a brief questionnaire focused on cultural policy — including a question about growing the local music industry — to the people running for mayor. You can read their questionnaire responses in full in the link below:
