If it is a day that ends in “y,” some rapper, celebrity, or media member likely has something to say about the state of Hip-Hop. This time, it was Benny The Butcher, who ranted about his dislike for how “nerds” now control the genre instead of “the streets.”
The Buffalo rapper opened the front camera on Instagram Live and unloaded his thoughts. “Yo, y’all see the state the game is in when the streets don’t hold the culture or the game,” the 40-year-old rapper said. “Now you got the weird Twitter nerds and the nerds and all these weird motherf**kers got they hands on the culture.”
The Griselda member didn’t fully look back on older Hip-Hop eras with rose-colored glasses, though. “The voice of the streets don’t mean as much as it did when we was coming up. It was a lot of cons to that, as well. I gotta say that,” he admitted. “But you see what happens when the streets don’t control the game no more. It’s a lot of f**k ni**a sh*t going on. And a lot of people are okay with it because they f**k ni**as.” Watch the rant below.
Last year, Benny showed love to one of the most talented and respected street rappers of the past. “That ni**a [Lloyd Banks] one of the top ni**as ever with bars,” he said in a June 2024 video. “That’s one rap ni**a ni**as don’t play with. It’s certain rap ni**as ni**as don’t play with. He got a million lines [where] you’ll be like, ‘How the f**k I didn’t think of that?’”
The Butcher got to experience the former G-Unit member’s mastery up close when they collaborated in 2021 on “Formaldehyde.” The track was part of Banks’ LP The Course Of The Inevitable, which also featured Styles P, Freddie Gibbs, Roc Marci, Vado, and more.
