Play Dirty, the new heist movie starring Mark Wahlberg and directed by Kiss Kiss Bang Bang and Iron Man 3’s Shane Black, is doing pretty well on Prime Video following its release last week. It’s currently the most-watched movie on the service in the UK today, and the second-most-streamed piece of content on there after The Girlfriend.
If you’ve not seen it yet, the film follows a career thief who is looking for revenge on the people responsible for a heist that went very wrong, but ends up becoming involved in a plot to overthrow the leader of a country.
As well as Wahlberg, the film also stars Rosa Salazar, Tony Shalhoub, Keegan-Michael Key, LaKeith Stanfield, Chai Hansen, and Thomas Jane.
Despite the strong cast and director, as well as its popularity, Play Dirty hasn’t been all that well-received by critics or fans.
On Rotten Tomatoes, the film has a below-average score of 46% positive from 52 collected reviews, while it has an average user score of 5.9 on IMDb from almost 9,000 ratings.

“It’s nowhere near the high-water mark of the man who was once the world’s best-paid screenwriter — but maybe this is enough, for now,” wrote Empire, adding: “It’s far from perfect, and a little off his ’90s/’00s heyday, but amid a glut of streaming-only action-comedies trying to ape Shane Black, it’s lovely to have the real McCoy back.”
“Play Dirty makes for the kind of entertainingly sweet and sour cocktail (the finale is both cold yet deserving) that I would happily get drunk on again,” reads The Guardian‘s review, while AVClub called it “just another one of the curiously fake-looking blockbusters that emerge every now and then from streaming’s abyssal money pit and immediately disappear from the public consciousness”.

Over on IMDb, one fan called it a “stylish heist that loses steam before picking up again”, while another described it as “like Ocean’s Eleven on steroids”.
A third user review pondered why Wahlberg keeps signing up for “throwaway projects” nowadays, believing he still has “the money and the reputation” to not need to do so. It should be noted that Robert Downey Jr was originally meant to play the lead role.
Play Dirty is available to watch now via Prime Video.
