She addressed criticism of the album, saying she embraces public reaction as part of show business.
She also talked about writing “Wi$h Li$t,” which was inspired by Travis Kelce.
Great news for Swifties: Taylor Swift’s The Life of a Showgirl promotion blitz continues with an October 7 appearance on Apple Music’s The Zane Lowe Show. There she chatted about everything from the songwriting process to her fiancé Travis Kelce—and fans even found out how Taylor feels about The Life of a Showgirl criticism. As Tay told host Zane Lowe, it’s a “rule of show business” to “welcome the chaos,” and she’s been doing just that.
“If it’s the first week of my album release and you are saying either my name or my album title, you’re helping,” she explained. “And art—I have a lot of respect for people’s subjective opinions on art. I’m not the art police. It’s like everybody is allowed to feel exactly how they want. And what our goal is as entertainers is to be a mirror.”
For what it’s worth, Taylor’s TLOAS has received a wide range of responses from music critics and fans alike, with Rolling Stone awarding it a perfect five-star review and Pitchfork giving it a more tepid 5.9 out of 10. But let the record show: Blondie stands by her twelfth studio album.
“I have such an eye on legacy when I’m making my music,” she said. “I know what I made. I know I adore it, and I know that on the theme of what the Showgirl is, all of this is part of it.”
Speaking of adoration! Taylor also got into the inspiration behind “Wi$h Li$t,” which (as you probably already figured out) is all about Travis.
“When I met Travis, I started to feel a little bit like I could be like a person who could have romantic whims and have these dreams,” she told Zane, later adding, “I don’t know if you’ve seen the movie Happy Gilmore, but he has this happy place where he goes into this utopia of this is exactly what he would want and this is where he escapes to mentally in times of stress, pressure, anxiety or chaos. And that chorus of that song is me just describing what my happy place is.”
