The Smashing Machine marked the lowest opening weekend of Johnson’s career
Dwayne Johnson remains grateful for The Smashing Machine even after the film underperformed at the box office on its opening weekend.
On Monday, Oct. 6, the actor, 53, posted photos from the film’s set on Instagram as he acknowledged the movie’s box office results. The A24 drama earned $6 million at the domestic box office — the lowest opening weekend of Johnson’s career, according to Variety.
“From deep in my grateful bones, thank you to everyone who has watched The Smashing Machine. In our storytelling world, you can’t control box office results — but what I realized you can control is your performance, and your commitment to completely disappear and go elsewhere,” he wrote. “And I will always run to that opportunity.”
“It was my honor to transform in this role for my director Benny Safdie @bowedtie. Thank you brother for believing in me,” Johnson added. “Truth is this film has changed my life. With deep gratitude, respect and radical empathy, dj.”

The Smashing Machine, in which Johnson portrays former MMA fighter Mark Kerr, came in third place at the domestic box office over its opening weekend. Taylor Swift‘s Official Release Party of a Showgirl made $33 million over the weekend, and Leonardo DiCaprio‘s One Battle After Another made $11 million in its second weekend in theaters, per Box Office Mojo.
Johnson stars opposite Emily Blunt, who portrays Kerr’s now-ex-wife Dawn Staples. Ryan Bader, Bas Rutten and Oleander Usyk also appear in the movie.

Johnson previously said making The Smashing Machine has changed his career and life. In a Sept. 26 Instagram post, the actor noted that the term “radical empathy,” is something he “learned from our director, Benny Safdie @bowedtie when becoming Mark Kerr, in our film, The Smashing Machine.”
“Taught me a deeper level of compassion because at the end of the day ~ you never know what kind of struggles and pain people are going through,” Johnson wrote at the time. “And truth is, everyone’s going through something.”
The Smashing Machine is in theaters now.
