The year 2026 is officially going to be a Game of Thrones year. With House of the Dragon Season 3 gearing up for a tentative June 2026 release, another spinoff titled A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms will hit the screens in January.
Serving as a prequel to Game of Thrones, A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms borrows its tale from George RR Martin’s Dunk and Egg novellas. With the plot mainly revolving around medieval knights, the show will encapsulate the challenges faced by Targaryens 50 years after the death of their last dragon.
In an interview with EW, showrunner Ira Parker explained what to expect from the prequel: “Nobody’s thinking about magic…This is hard nose, grind it out, gritty, medieval knights, cold with a really light, hopeful touch. It’s a wonderful place to be. We are ground up in this series; we are starting right at the bottom. We’re not with the lords and ladies, the kings and queens.”
Unlike the behemoths House of the Dragon and Game of Thrones, the prequel is surprisingly built on a smaller scale, so much so that it even lacks a monumental title sequence. “The title sequences on the original [Game of Thrones] and House of the Dragon are big and epic and incredible. Ramin Djawadi’s score is orchestral and large, and beautiful. That’s not really Dunk’s M.O. He’s plain and he’s simple and he’s to-the-point. He doesn’t have a lot of flash to him,” explained Ira.
With no confirmed date yet, A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms is set for January release, starring Peter Claffey and Dexter Sol Ansell in the lead among others.
