Would Pierce Brosnan ever revisit the world of James Bond? For Denis Villeneuve‘s upcoming 007 film, he’d consider it.
In a new interview with Radio Times, Brosnan — who played the suave spy in four films from 1995 to 2002 — entertained the idea of a senior citizen Bond, not unlike the character he plays in his new film “The Thursday Murder Club.”
“I don’t think anyone wants to see a craggy, 72-year-old Bond, but if Villeneuve had something up his sleeve I would look at it in a heartbeat,” Brosnan said. “Why not? It’s great entertainment. It could be lots of laughs. Bald caps, prosthetics… who knows?”
He added that he and his wife, Keely Shaye Smith, have been eagerly awaiting the news of who will be the next Bond. After Amazon took control of the franchise in February and Villeneuve signed on as director with “Peaky Blinders” creator Steven Knight penning the script, the announcement can’t be too far away.
“I have been listening to the drumbeat of expectation of who’s going to be the next James Bond,” Brosnan said. “There are many great candidates out there, and I’m sure they’re going to make it a spectacle of delight.”
In “Thursday Murder Club,” Brosnan plays retired union leader Ron Ritchie opposite Helen Mirren as former spy Elizabeth Best. Mirren also recently weighed in on who should be the next Bond, telling Saga Magazine that it “has to be a guy.”
“I’m such a feminist, but James Bond has to be a guy,” she said. “You can’t have a woman. It just doesn’t work. James Bond has to be James Bond, otherwise it becomes something else.”
