The last television role that Malcolm-Jamal Warner filmed before his tragic death is set to air on October 7. The former star of The Cosby Show appeared in an episode of Murder in a Small Town, and that episode is about to air. Ahead of the episode appearing on Fox, the show’s executive producer opened up about Warner.

The celebrity.land spoke with Murder in a Small Town executive producer, writer, and showrunner Ian Weir. “We lost him far too soon,” he said of Warner. He raved about the actor, sharing, “He was absolutely wonderful. I hadn’t let myself dare hope that someone of his stature would be drawn to that role.”

“It’s hard to believe this was his last part, and that I had the privilege of [working] with him. He was a generous soul, a lovely presence on set, and kind and humble.”

The episode is titled “Mother Love,” and it is the third episode of the show’s second season.

Warner plays Richard Bannister, the “protective father who becomes a top suspect in a murder investigation when his ex-wife is killed just after returning to town.”

Weir added that Warner’s character is “a struggling single dad who is fiercely protective of his teenage daughter. What he brought to the role is so inspirational.”

The actor’s performance was “simply magical,” Weir shared. He noted that Warner was “a really lovely man” and said his death was “terrible, absolutely terrible. We lost him far too soon.”

Weir explained that Warner brought something to the role he hadn’t even envisioned when he wrote the story. Warner’s character became “the emotional heart of the story,” and he admitted he “hadn’t quite seen that until Malcolm-Jamal inhabited the role.”

No edits were made to Warner’s performance after his death. “The episode plays exactly as it had been [planned],” Weir stated. During his time on the set, Weir recalled, Warner was “dedicated to the craft” and “collaborative.” It seemed everybody with the show was thrilled to have him on the set for that episode, knowing him from his Cosby Show days.

“As an artist, he was given the part of a father raising his child on his own, and he brought so much heart to it,” Weir noted. He credited Warner for being “one of those rare actors who was also quick on his feet.”
