Little House on the Prairie star Melissa Gilbert made a bold confession about Diane Keaton after the iconic actress’ death at 79.
On Saturday, Oct. 11, multiple sources confirmed Keaton’s death, although few details were available as the news broke and her family requested privacy.
In the wake of Keaton’s shocking death, Gilbert took to Instagram to share a tribute for the beloved actress and an emotional admission. The actresses had never worked together on a project. However, the former child actress, 61, held Keaton in the highest regard.
“I am so , so sad to hear that Diane Keaton has passed. It seems unreal to me that someone so vital and vibrant is gone,” Gilbert captioned her update honoring the Something’s Gotta Give icon. “I know that she will live on through her extraordinary body of work and, most importantly, through her beloved children…but to imagine a world without her here seems…impossible.”
The star behind Laura Ingalls Wilder in the TV adaptation of the beloved book series continued, “People often ask me who my idol is and I’ve never really answered truthfully because I hoped our paths would cross again (they did once when I was seventeen) and I didn’t want her to know that she was my idol ..so much so..that I knew I’d gush and say something embarrassing…I kept it to myself, so that if we ever did meet, she wouldn’t know what a dufus [sic] I am in advance. My giddiness and idolatry would roll out slowly (hopefully) so that I might be able to chat with her like a (semi) normal person for a minute.”

To conclude her tribute to Keaton, Gilbert declared, “I loved everything about her. Her versatility and facility as an actor. Her style for sure. Her independence . Her humor. Her smile. Her whole being. I have so many questions for her…that I guess won’t be answered this lifetime. So I will simply say ‘good night sweet woman. May flights of angels sing thee to thy rest’ with undying love, me (your biggest fan).”
In the comments, Gilbert’s followers praised her for the beautiful post and joined her in mourning Keaton’s death. One Instagram user wrote, “😢😢😢🙏❤️🙏she was truly the best.”
Another fan shared, “What a beautiful uncensored tribute ❤️.”
Someone else commented, “Sweet tribute Melissa ❤️ I have to watch Baby Boom in its entirety whenever it’s on TV, my favorite of her amazing work.”
A different Instagram user wrote, “Such shocking & heartbreaking news. I’m so sad. She was such an amazing actress & one of my favorite actresses. If I was sad just watch First Wives Club & laugh hysterically on the window washer scene. RIP Diane 💔🙏🏻🙏🏻.”
Meanwhile, yet another follower echoed, “I was so shocked and very saddened to learn of Diane’s passing. She leaves a legacy of fantastic performances that will, thankfully, live on through her brilliant work. ❤️.”
