Diane Keaton had reportedly been privately struggling with declining health in the months before her death.
Keaton died on October 11 at age 79 in California, and according to a close friend, the decline happened quick.
“She declined very suddenly, which was heartbreaking for everyone who loved her,” the friend told PEOPLE.
“It was so unexpected, especially for someone with such strength and spirit.”
Those final months were kept out of public view. The source said only Keaton’s closest relatives were aware of what was happening.
“I knew I was going to live in a brick house when I grew up,” she wrote.
Keaton moved into the Brentwood house in 2017, and told Wine Spectator that it was the first time a home felt complete.
“Something’s right, because I love it,” she told the news outlet, “This is my dream home.”
Neighbors noticed a shift as well. A longtime Brentwood resident, Keaton had been a familiar sight walking her dog each day, always in her trademark hat and sunglasses.
“She was usually dressed the same, with a hat and her signature sunglasses regardless of the weather,” a neighbor told PEOPLE. “She was always very nice, funny and chatty. She’d talk to her dog like he was a person.”
