Diane Keatononce told Parade that her absolute favorite song to sing was Frank Sinatra’s “What’ll I Do?” The tune, which was written by Irving Berlin, held a special place for Keaton, who recited the line, “What’ll I do when you are far away and I am blue…” during a 2022 interview.

“What’ll I Do?” is a song about heartbreak and loss. The lyrics have one asking how they will go on after losing someone they loved dearly. There have been a number of different covers of the song, including one popular version sang by Bea Arthur on an episode of The Golden Girls.

The melancholy melody seems to be fitting for those mourning Keaton, who died on Saturday, Oct. 11. Her family did not offer any additional details and has asked for privacy during this difficult time.

Sources say that Keaton’s death was very unexpected.

“She declined very suddenly, which was heartbreaking for everyone who loved her,” a friend of the Family Stone star told People magazine. “It was so unexpected, especially for someone with such strength and spirit,” the source continued, adding, “in her final months, she was surrounded only by her closest family, who chose to keep things very private. Even longtime friends weren’t fully aware of what was happening.”

Keaton loved music and even recorded her very first Christmas song in 2024. The song “First Christmas” was released just in time for the holidays last year.

“Sometimes, the most beautiful moments happen when you least expect them. While recording ‘First Christmas,’ @jonasmyrin kept on playing, letting the music wash over us, and this spontaneous moment was captured,” Keaton captioned an Instagram post on Dec. 7, 2024. “It reminds me why I love music—it has a way of speaking straight to the heart. I hope this little glimpse into the journey of ‘First Christmas’ touches you as much as it did me.”
