According to The Direct, Batman: Caped Crusader has made one minor announcement ahead of Season 2. As teased in the final episode of Season 1, Joker will play a large part in the upcoming saga of Bruce Timm’s new animated Batman show. Yet, Matt Reeves and the show’s creators have stated that this will be a much different version of the Joker that modern fans are used to seeing. While the first season had somewhat mixed reviews, fans have widely praised its authenticity to one classic period of Batman. It is widely speculated that the show’s version of the Joker will be one that pays more homage to the classic Clown Prince of Crime.
Batman’s greatest antithesis has had almost as many adaptations as the Dark Knight himself. Joker is often used to represent the Yin to Batman’s Yang. The deranged clown even believes he is the cosmic result of the universe attempting to balance out the good Batman does in the world. This is ironic since Batman ends up creating the Joker in most of his origins. That said, the Joker has yet to have a clear origin to this day.
Batman: Caped Crusader will most likely demonstrate a golden age version of the famed villain. For one reason or another, the Joker is nearly as popular as Batman himself. Therefore, showrunners will have their work cut out for them when it comes to fan expectations. However, they have assured fans that those who are familiar with the character’s history will understand the direction they are going in. This has caused many fans to begin speculating what versions and storylines they could be referencing in the coming season.
The original Joker in the comics isn’t nearly as deranged as his current counterpart. In fact, he is more like a deranged prankster than a criminal mastermind. He might rob and steal, but he doesn’t commit the terrible crimes that Joker is associated with today. That said, it’s unlike that the show will let Joker completely devolve to his golden-age counterpart.
At this point, all eyes are on the latest Batman animated show to see if it can truly establish itself among the competition. Much of its future will rely on audiences’ perception of how Joker is adapted. If audiences end up liking what the show has to offer, it could become the de facto animated Batman series of the generation.
Overall, for many, Batman is an incredibly important hero, and many consider him the peak of what superheroes should be. Many of the same expectations are placed on the Caped Crusader’s antitheses. If the Joker is not handled with care, then there is no way to guarantee that the show will continue to receive consistent praise.
