Nicolas Sparks and M. Night Shyamalan are probably two people you wouldn’t think to pair in a room together – what could they possibly have in common? It’s like mixing soda and milk. But there was a time when they almost joined forces to churn up a cinematic spectacle that might have changed both the suspense and romance genres. Or maybe not, because we never got to see that.
If you’re still guessing, here’s the answer: The Notebook. Yes, that iconic Notebook – the one that had you reaching for a tissue box, or, years later, maybe had you cringing at what you’d just watched.
In a recent interview with Variety, Sparks revealed why it never happened: “He was busy writing this movie, ‘The Sixth Sense.’ I don’t know if you’ve heard of that movie. I wonder how that eventually did?” he added, “The original writer was Jan Sardi, and they decided to go with a new writer after that, that ended up being Jeremy Leven, but they had asked Night Shyamalan to do that.”
We may have never gotten that version, but instead, we got two films that did well individually. While the romance classic The Notebook left its mark – or not, depending on your tastes – Shyamalan’s The Sixth Sense was the big-money winner, earning $672.8 million globally and landing six Oscar nominations, including for Best Picture, Best Director, and Best Original Screenplay nods for Shyamalan.
