Gwyneth Paltrow Says the ‘Last Time’ She Was Drunk Was a Wild Night with Cameron Diaz: ‘I Was Hammered’

Gwyneth Paltrow hasn’t been drunk in years, but Cameron Diaz was there the last time she cut loose.

When Paltrow, 53, spoke with British Vogue for its November cover story, published Wednesday, Oct. 15, the actress recalled that the last time she felt “properly drunk” was on her 43rd birthday, as she answered questions about her junk food habits and vices over the years.

“Oh, man, so long ago. I think it was my 43rd birthday,” Paltrow said. “[Her husband Brad Falchuk] had this dinner for me in New York City, and a bunch of my friends from high school were there, and Cameron Diaz, one of my best friends, and her husband, Benj.”

“We had this great Chinese dinner, then someone was like, ‘Let’s go dancing.’ I did shots and I was hammered,” Paltrow recalled. “The next morning I had a meeting and I’ll never forget it. I was like, ‘Would you excuse me for a second?’ And I went and puked in the bathroom and then came back. That was the last time.”

Diaz and Paltrow’s friendship dates back to the 2000s. In a 2012 interview with Harper’s Bazaar U.K., Diaz, 53, said that she and Paltrow “became very close” following her father Emilio Diaz‘s death in 2008. “She reached out after my dad’s death,” Diaz said at that time, per E! News. “It was very sweet. We bonded on that.”

Back in 2018, a source told PEOPLE that Diaz gave Paltrow advice on keeping her wedding to Falchuk, 54, that year as private as possible. (Diaz and her musician husband Madden, 46, have been married since 2015.) Paltrow also referred to Diaz as her “ride or die” when she marked Diaz’s 51st birthday on Instagram in August 2023.

Both Paltrow and Diaz are in the midst of returning to their film acting careers. Paltrow stars with Timothée Chalamet in December’s Marty Supreme, her first movie since 2019, and Diaz appeared in her first film since 2014 with this year’s Back in Action. She will also reprise her voice role as Fiona in the Shrek series with its upcoming fifth entry.

As for Paltrow’s other vices, the actress told British Vogue that she last smoked a cigarette on the night she and Falchuk married in 2018, and she last ate junk food the night before her interview with the outlet. 

“A friend came over and I ate a chocolate-covered Oreo. That is trans fats to the max,” she said. “That’s, like, seed oils all the way. But once in a while, it’s so important to follow those cravings. I love it. I think it’s all about balance. Going too strongly in any direction is never good.”
