STRANGER THINGS 5 Will End Upside Down and All Character Arcs, So Don’t Look for Them in the Spinoff

Stranger Things 5 will bring the Duffer Brothers epic sci-fi drama to an end. For nearly a decade, we’ve followed an ensemble of Hawkins, Indiana natives as they fight against forces from another dimension. This heartfelt story of love, friendship, growing up, and growing apart is one that we hate to see come to an end, but it is the right time to do it. And, while we know that there’s plans for a Stranger Things spinoff in, we probably will not see these characters nor any Upside Down shenanigans because their story will end in 2025.

In a profile interview with Variety, Matt and Ross Duffer dove into the emotional journey of wrapping up Stranger Things. They spoke a lot about the show’s important place in their lives and, of course, praised the cast for knocking it out the park. And, the brothers took their time crafting this series’ ending so they could hopefully stick the landing with fans. Matt Duffer reiterated that Stranger Things 5 will indeed bring everyone’s story to a conclusion and close the chapter on what’s been happening in Hawkins for years for good.

“We do every last remaining thing we wanted to do with the Demogorgons and Mind Flayer and Vecna and the Upside Down and Hawkins and these characters,” said Matt. “This is a complete story. It’s done.”

While he doesn’t outright state this, it is heavily implied that the still-in-progress Stranger Things spinoff will not have cameos from its original cast. It seems that it will not even take place in Hawkins nor include the Upside Down, if the statement above is any indication.

Ross said the Stranger Things spinoff would not expand on the show’s mythology but rather “exist in another world” with “connective tissue.” We don’t know what that means yet and we certainly won’t find out until after Stranger Things 5 airs.
