Neo-soul icon D’Angelo, born Michael Eugene Archer, has died at the age of 51 after a private battle with pancreatic cancer, a source confirmed to PEOPLE.
TMZ first reported that the singer, best known for hits like “Brown Sugar” and “Untitled (How Does It Feel)”, passed away in New York City on Tuesday, Oct. 14.
“He was in hospice for two weeks but had been in the hospital for months,” a source told PEOPLE.
From Richmond Roots to Grammy Winner
Born in Richmond, Virginia, to a Pentecostal minister, D’Angelo was playing piano in church by age 5. By his teens, he was performing at talent shows and later won Amateur Night at the Apollo. With the prize money, he bought a four-track recorder that helped shape his breakthrough 1995 debut, Brown Sugar.
The album went platinum within a year, earned four Grammy nominations, and cemented him as a leader of the neo-soul movement. His 2000 follow-up, Voodoo, debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 and won a Grammy for Best R&B Album, while “Untitled (How Does It Feel)” brought him even greater acclaim.
Legacy That Transcended Music
Though he faced struggles with addiction and legal troubles, D’Angelo returned in 2014 with Black Messiah, a socially conscious project hailed as a masterpiece, as reported by PEOPLE. It earned him another Grammy and reestablished him as one of music’s most vital voices.
Throughout his career, he collaborated with legends including Questlove, Lauryn Hill, Raphael Saadiq, and Jay-Z. His final release came in 2024 with “I Want You Forever” on The Book of Clarence soundtrack.
Remembering a Soul Pioneer
D’Angelo’s influence can be felt across generations of R&B, hip-hop, and soul artists. His artistry blended gospel roots, jazz sensibility, and raw vulnerability, creating music that was both intimate and revolutionary.
While the world has lost a singular voice, his work continues to inspire—and will remain a guidepost for musicians and fans who believe in the power of soul.
