Neo-soul icon D’Angelo, born Michael Eugene Archer, has died at the age of 51 after a private battle with pancreatic cancer, a source confirmed to PEOPLE.

TMZ first reported that the singer, best known for hits like “Brown Sugar” and “Untitled (How Does It Feel)”, passed away in New York City on Tuesday, Oct. 14.

“He was in hospice for two weeks but had been in the hospital for months,” a source told PEOPLE.

From Richmond Roots to Grammy Winner

Born in Richmond, Virginia, to a Pentecostal minister, D’Angelo was playing piano in church by age 5. By his teens, he was performing at talent shows and later won Amateur Night at the Apollo. With the prize money, he bought a four-track recorder that helped shape his breakthrough 1995 debut, Brown Sugar.
