A ‘Second-Hand’ Advice To Gulshan Devaiah
Gulshan Devaiah has been garnering a lot of praise for his powerful performance in Kantara: Chapter 1.
While Gulshan is one of the finest actors in current times, he has been labelled ‘underrated’ his entire career.
In a recent interview, Gulshan Devaiah revealed how he once got advice to buy a second-hand car to change his image.
He said, “Even if people call me underrated as a criticism, I take it positively.”
Gulshan added, “For instance, well-wishers tell me I don’t monetise my career. And I get their point. It’s valid. Once somebody told me to buy a big car, a second-hand BMW or Mercedes ki thoda image banega (for the image). From their point of view, they are correct because I know how perception works in this industry. But you can’t control that. I stay as authentic as I can. Unko please karne ke liye main nahi karunga (I won’t do anything to please others).”
Gulshan Devaiah’s Latest Film
Gulshan Devaiah plays Raja Kulashekara in Kantara: Chapter 1, a regal yet deeply flawed antagonist. He describes Kulashekara as “entitled, jealous, good-for-nothing… perpetually drunk,” a man born into power and luxury who becomes dangerous when given authority.
Directed, written, and headlined by Rishab Shetty, this 2025 Kannada mythological-action film is a prequel to the 2022 blockbuster Kantara.
The story is set in pre-colonial coastal Karnataka (around 300 CE), and delves into the origins of the rituals, spirituality, ancestral conflict and folklore such as the Buta Kola.
The cast includes Rishab Shetty, Rukmini Vasanth (as Kanakavathi), Jayaram, Kishore, and Devaiah in a key antagonist role.
Produced under Hombale Films, it was released on October 2, 2025, across multiple Indian languages and internationally.The film has been praised for its immersive worldbuilding, visuals, spiritual depth and blending of folklore with human drama.
Kantara: Chapter 1 has crossed ₹500 crore worldwide and is inching towards the ₹700 crore club.
