Oct. 16 (UPI) — Sony Pictures Classics and Fathom Entertainment on Thursday released the first trailer for the filmed version of Broadway production of Merrily, We Roll Along ahead of its December arrival in cinemas.
The Tony-winning musical from Stephen Sondheim and George Furth was filmed toward the end of its run at the Hudson Theatre in New York City for the big-screen offering.
The musical stars Daniel Radcliffe, Jonathan Groff and Lindsay Mendez as three friends trying to find success in the entertainment industry over three decades — but told in reverse chronological order. Based on the George S. Kauffman and Moss Hart play, the production was originally staged in 1981 and had a notoriously short run.
The 2023-24 revival, however, was widely acclaimed and won four Tonys for Radcliffe, Groff, Best Revival of a Musical and Best Orchestration.
The Broadway production hits theaters Dec. 5.

Filmmaker Richard Linklater is also working on his own film adaptation of Merrily, We Roll Along, which he plans to film over the course of 20 years, similar to his approach with Boyhood, which was filmed over 12 years.
