It’s been a three decades since longtime Selena fans were blown away by the iconic 1997 biopic starring Jennifer Lopez, who took on the role as the Queen of Tejano Music and stunned movie-goers across the globe.
The performance launched Lopez’s career as an actress and established her as a major star while the film solidified Selena as a cultural icon.
Now, Netflix is trying its own hand at honoring the beloved, late Mexican singer.
Through bated breath, the streaming giant has confirmed that an award-winning documentary detailing the life and legacy of the late Selena Quintanilla has finally received a launch date for its debut.
Per its press release, “Selena y Los Dinos” will begin streaming on Nov. 17.
Directed by Isabel Castro, the much-anticipated documentary provides an intimate view into the singer’s life and ventures deeper into the connections she created with her bandmates, which included her siblings A.B. III and Suzette, and, of course, Chris Pérez, the band’s guitarist who fell in love with the singer, eventually becoming her husband.
The film, which generated an insurmountable buzz when it first premiered at the 2025 Sundance Film Festival, debuted in Texas at SXSW earlier this year and even headlined the 2025 CineFestival in San Antonio this past summer.
The film also won the US Documentary Special Jury Award for Archival Storytelling at the Sundance Film Festival and collected a SXSW Audience Award in the musical story category 24 Beats Per Second.
In a press release, Castro shared her desire to honor Selena’s stellar “rise” to fame while showcasing the never-before-seen, where it’s a “behind the stage” feel of the singer as a sister, daughter and wife.
“Through personal archive and intimate interviews with her family, the film reveals new dimensions of her journey that have never been seen before,” Castro noted.
