Jessica Chastain isn’t a regular mom — she’s the other mom. And she’s already terrifying audiences in the Other Mommy trailer, months before the film’s official release.
Other Mommy stars Chastain as Ursula, the mother of Bela (Arabella Olivia Clark), a precocious child who has forged a relationship with the titular demonic entity — who just so happens to look exactly like Ursula. The trailer shows “Ursula” arriving home early to make Bela lunch… but it doesn’t take long for “other mommy” Ursula to tip her hand and suggest she may not be who she says she is. That’s officially proven when, midway through the trailer, she contorts her body into a spider-like creature that’s so scary it makes Bela’s father, Russ (Jay Duplass), jump and crash through a window in fear.
And it’s not just Russ who is a victim of that jump scare. People who went to theaters to see The Odyssey during the film’s opening weekend were horrified by the moment in the Other Mommy trailer.
“This played in theaters for me before the Odyssey,” one viewer wrote in the YouTube comments for the new trailer. “I lowkey thought it was an ice cream commercial and was genuinly shocked when it wasn’t.” Another added, “Man this trailer showed up before the odyssey, and that spider thing scared the s*** out of me and a family sitting next to me all died.”
Another person intending to watch the Greek mythology epic said the jump scare in the trailer was “so terrifying” that they left the theater.
The upcoming film, based on the 2024 novel Incidents Around the House by Josh Malerman, is helmed by Host and The Boogeyman director Rob Savage and produced by James Wan, producer of The Conjuring universe. Marvel actor Arian Moayed, Indiana Jones star Karen Allen, Severance actor Dichen Lachman and The Summer I Turned Pretty‘s Sean Kaufman also appear in the film.
This film marks the second time Chastain has portrayed a woman who must protect a child haunted by a menacing maternal spirit, following her role in 2013’s Mama. She also had to save her kid from an evil (but human) mother played by Anne Hathaway in the 2024 thriller Mothers’ Instinct.
Other Mommy hits theaters on Oct. 9.
