Rachel Zegler is ready to step into the spotlight once again, and this time as a music legend.
The West Side Story star has been cast to portray Gloria Estefan in an upcoming biopic.
Rising to fame in the 1980s as the lead singer of Miami Sound Machine, Gloria Estefan helped bring Latin rhythms into mainstream pop with hits like “Conga” and “Rhythm Is Gonna Get You.” Beyond her musical achievements, Estefan has been a trailblazer for women and the Latinx community, advocating for cultural representation and philanthropy. With multiple Grammys, a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame and decades of chart-topping music, her legacy makes her one of pop music’s most influential figures.

Though the rumor has been circulating on the Internet for almost a year now, the Queen of Latin Pop confirmed it herself on Friday with an interview with The Sun.
“I think she’s awesome, I think she’s incredible. I know she’s killed it in Evita,” Estefan told The Sun.
This past summer, Zegler starred as Eva Perón in the West End revival of Evita in London. The musical follows the rise of Eva “Evita” Perón from a poor, illegitimate child to the powerful First Lady of Argentina. The show begins with her death in 1952 and then uses flashbacks to trace her journey from a rural small town to Buenos Aires, where she becomes an actress, and eventually meets and marries Colonel Juan Perón.
The 24-year-old actress rose to international fame with her breakout role as Maria in Steven Spielberg’s 2021 adaptation of West Side Story, earning critical acclaim and a Golden Globe. She then went on to appear in many blockbusters such as Shazam! Fury of the Gods and The Hunger Games: Ballad of the Songbirds and Snakes in 2023, and Snow White earlier this year.

The biopic is still in its very early stages of pre-production. The film was originally going to be an adaptation of Estefan’s 2015 jukebox musical On Your Feet!, although that idea has changed.
“We’re still working on the green light because we’re figuring out where to do it, how to do it. This has been in the works for quite a few years now,” Estefan said. The “Mi Terra” singer also revealed that she has met Zegler over Zoom and thinks the actress has “got a beautiful singing voice and [is] a great actor.”
“I just need to offer her an actual part,” the 68-year-old said. “So we need to be greenlit completely and we’re almost there.”
